A friend of mine was saying how she loved her tortilla press, and although I have found some local corn tortillas that are pretty good/few ingredients, I couldn't stop thinking about simple and delicious homemade tortillas.
In college, I went on a fun Spring Break trip to Mexico with a volunteer group. Not that kind of Spring Break in Mexico. We drove to a small town 2 hours inland from Ensenada and helped remodel and clean up an orphanage. At the time I was vegetarian, but not vegan, and there were a couple other vegetarians in the group. There was also a vegan with us, and since we were responsible for making our own meals, she volunteered to do all the cooking. I had experience in the kitchen, particularly for large groups, having been my grandpa's helper when he was a caterer all through my childhood. One of my jobs was to walk down to the tortilla shop each morning, where we'd buy tortillas by the kilo. They were made fresh in the morning and the greatest tortillas ever. It's been 10 years, but I still remember how good everything tasted scooped up with those fresh tortillas. I make tacos at least every Tuesday, and often more, so I decided I needed the tortilla press. It's *sort of* an early birthday present to myself... Or at least that's the way I've sold it to my husband. Really, the homemade tortillas do all the selling. I read the reviews on Amazon and learned that it's best to line it with a gallon ziplock bag cut open instead of plastic wrap, and to put the the seam of the bag at the side that opens up.
I followed the directions right on my bag of Maseca and I haven't had a dud yet (I've made 3 batches in 2 days...). I've also now spoiled my kids because once they tasted fresh tortilla quesadillas, that's all they want! A friend of mine has had some serious issues with hers, so I highly recommend this brand because it's worked so well for me!

I wrote a children's book, How Our Vegan Family Celebrates, to help vegans and vegan allies know how to include vegans in their celebrations and give affirmation to vegan kids who may feel alone. The book goes through holidays throughout the year and has a section at the back with parent tips!
