Nutrition Research and Reading

A plant-based diet can be scary for some who have seen sensationalized stories in the media, but a vegan diet is advocated by many registered dietitians, doctors of various fields (especially popular among cardiologists, it seems), and other nutritional experts and researchers, as well as environmentalists looking at the health of our planet as a result of animal agriculture.  It's no longer a fringe movement, but taking center stage in talks of both environmental and health issues worldwide.    I'm just a blogger, though, and I don't claim to be an expert, so as LeVar Burton says, "You don't have to take my word for it!"
Here are some books and research organizations/websites that can give you more information about healthy plant-based diets and lifestyles.

Books about the Benefits of a Plant-Based Diet

Vegan for LIfe is written by two registered dieticians and is always my first recommendation on a comprehensive look at eating a healthy and balanced vegan diet at any stage of life.  One of the authors, Ginny Messina, has a great website called The Vegan RD, linked below.  It's searchable and full of researched and accurate nutrition information.  Also by Ginny Messina is the book Vegan for Her, which specifically addresses the needs of women.

The Sustainability Secret is the companion book to the documentary Cowspiracy, which addresses how animal agriculture impacts climate change.

Forks Over Knives is another documentary about plant-based living, from the perspective of cardiologists who promote a more specific diet plan than simply plant-based, and there is a companion book that goes with the documentary for those wanting to learn more as well as a cookbook.

Websites with Research and Nutritional Information

The Vegan RD is a searchable blog written from the perspective of a vegan dietician who writes about nutrition and addresses/debunks many of the sensationalized vegan headlines that go around.

Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine is a cooperative project over over 12,000 physicians working to compile research and information on fighting disease with nutrition-based prevention.

Vegan Outreach has a clear and concise information page called Vegan Health that adresses the most common questions about a vegan diet.

Documentaries

Earthlings.  This one is graphic and extreme and looks at the cruelty of the animal agriculture industry.  Full disclosure, I have not been able to watch the whole thing because it was so shocking, but for those who need a wake up call about animal cruelty, this gives it.

Cowspiracy.  I loved this well-researched look at how animal agriculture is destroying our environment.  You can watch it on Netflix as well.

Forks Over Knives.  This documentary follows up on the work of The China Study and looks at the effect of animal agriculture on the major diseases facing humans today.  I got a copy for my grandpa years ago and he loved it.  It's definitely good for those who aren't as interested in animal ethics, just health.

Vegucated.  I've watched this with younger (not kids) people and those who are simply curious about a vegan lifestyle.  It's not too heavy handed or graphic, but touches on all these things.

Healthy Plant-Based Lunches

Here's a handout I created for a talk at a vegfest about Plant-Based lunches, including the Protein, Iron, and Calcium needs for children and common vegan sources.  I have been meaning to do something more with this information, but for now I wanted to make it accessible to my readers.
