My Main Squeeze

When my oldest child was a baby/toddler, we lived off those cool Plum Organic and Happy Baby squeeze packs of healthy smoothie-like purees.  I was in a very active playgroup, and we were always on the go.  The one thing I wanted, though, was to be able to take a squeeze pack of vegan yogurt, and that just didn't exist.
Then one day I was at Toys R Us and they had this cool Infantino Squeeze Station.  It came with packets just like the ones I'd been buying, but you filled them with your own things, like homemade smoothies and yogurt!  Hurray!
I hadn't used it in a while, and I've actually considered getting rid of it a couple times, and now I'm glad I didn't.
With the recent recall on the packets of apple sauce that my daughter brings for her snack at school nearly every day, I wanted to get back to making my own.  Also, we are trying to do a spending freeze until Thanksgiving, including groceries if we can help it (and with my well-stocked freezer and pantry, we totally can).
So, today I grabbed a few apples that had one bite taken out of them- hazards of having a 4 year old, a can of organic papaya in pineapple juice that I recently ordered online, an some frozen mango.  I simmered it all together with a few pinches of cinnamon until the apples were soft and then pureed them and filled up 6 packets.  They need to stay in the refrigerator, but are okay to take for lunch without going bad.

This is great for so many reasons:
  • The packets are clear, so if you do get mold/spoilage, you can see it.  This was one of the biggest suggestions I saw with the recent recall, that if parents could see inside, they would have caught the mold before the kids ate them.
  • You choose what goes in.  I've blended peas into a sweet smoothie, or whatever healthy fruits and veggies you like in a smoothie.
  • It's a great way to package vegan yogurt for on the go.  Before it closed down (sob), I used to get the unsweetened soy yogurt from WholeSoy and Co. and then add my own sweetener (maple syrup is my favorite.
  • The packets are inexpensive, unlike some of the other reusable squeeze packs I've seen, so if you lose or it gets accidentally thrown away, it's not a big deal.
  • You can use up half eaten fruit by chopping up and freezing all the apples, bananas, and more that get left half-eaten and that you don't want to waste.

I wrote a children's book, How Our Vegan Family Celebrates, to help vegans and vegan allies know how to include vegans in their celebrations and give affirmation to vegan kids who may feel alone.  The book goes through holidays throughout the year and has a section at the back with parent tips!
